Wood City, Helsinki

Wood City is a unique wooden city block, located in a significant place in the entrance view of Helsinki's Jätkäsaari. As a flagship of Finnish wood construction, Wood City is a fine example of how to build variously from wood. We defined fire safety solutions for a high-risen wooden office building using risk analysis and simulations.

Wood City is an urban eight-storey wooden city block developed by SRV. It will become the gateway to the new Jätkäsaari in Helsinki. The Wood City complex combines design, sustainable development, urban community and good transport connections. Our work was commissioned by Stora Enso Oyj and SRV Group Plc. Our partner in the project is architectural office Anttinen Oiva Arkkitehdit Oy. The Wood City area is expected to be completed in 2021.

Our challenge was a high-rise wooden office building with visible wood surfaces and large fire compartments. We defined fire safety solutions using risk analysis and fire simulation to achieve the desired objectives: building height, visible wood surfaces, and the size of fire departments.

Project involved fire safety design, risk analysis, fire simulation, plans for smoke clearance, consulting during implementation and regulatory negotiations. In addition, we have consulted other designers.
